What white noise is
White noise has equal energy at every pitch, which gives it a bright, even hiss. Because it covers the whole range of hearing, it is the most effective kind of noise for masking other sounds, such as voices in the next room.
If it feels harsh
Some people find white noise tiring over a long stretch. Pink noise is a little softer and brown noise is deeper still. You can also blend them here: try white noise low, with brown noise underneath.
